Fighting cumulative trauma disorders

By Staff -- Industrial Distribution, 1/1/1999

Distributors who provide end users with safety solutions regarding cumulative trauma disorders will continue to gain importance in the minds of the customer. CTD's -- which include a variety of conditions including carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis and other ailments -- result in lost productivity, costly insurance claims and unhealthy work conditions for businesses.

According to Bureau or Labor statistics, employers spend an estimated $20 billion annually on insurance claims related to CTD's. "The good news is that financial losses and the potential harm to employees can be reduced or eliminated," says Daniel Mahoney, of ECS Risk Control, a health and safety firm located in Exton, Pa. "Often, the changes or improvements can be done inexpensively and practically."

According to ECS, distributors can help customers avoid CTD's by doing the following:

* Control extreme joint movement by changing tools, the position of the employee or the position of the part.

* Reduce excessive force by using sharp tools, holding items with clamps or powering with motors.

* Reduce repetitive motion by assigning varying job tasks, redesigning tools and automation.
