PTDA meeting focuses on future

San Diego, Calif.--More than 1,000 members of the Power Transmission Distributors Assn. met in San Diego Oct. 14-17 for the group's annual convention. Members attended a number of educational workshops covering topics such as technology, sales automation, distributor planning, and customer segmentation as well as the always popular MD-IDEX program.Rick Prohammer of the Arthur Andersen Co. also unveiled the latest installment of the Facing the Forces of Change study in which he highlighted the major trends affecting the distribution business. The report is produced in cooperation with the National Assn. of Wholesaler-Distributors. The study was based on responses from more than 1,000 wholesaler-distributor panelists. The report points out that the combined effects of trends in electronic commerce, strategic alliances, supply chain integration, and globalization are changing the ways that wholesaler-distributors approach their businesses.
During the general session, Gene Addington of Diamond Chain was presented with the prestigious Warren Pike Award for outstanding service to the association and the PT business. Addington has served on many association committees and has been a long-time PTDA supporter. Canadian Bearings was presented with the Distributor Trailblazer Award for developing an employee training program.
The Rotor Clip Co. and Rockwell Automation/Dodge were presented with Trailblazer Awards for manufacturers. Rotor Clip was honored for developing an Internet-based training program for distributors. Rockwell Automation was singled out for integrating electronic and mechanical technology to create "smart" bearings and speed reducers.
Randy Haas, a sales representative for Baldor Motors and Drives, was named Manufacturer Field Salesperson of the Year for 1998. The award was presented by Jack Keough, Industrial Distribution associate publisher and editor. Haas was nominated for his technical expertise as well as his ability to work with distributors.
Doug Savage of Bearing Service Inc. is PTDA's new president. He succeeds Bill Purser of Applied Industrial Technologies. Bob DeVinney is the new allied chair, succeeding Stan Owens of Warner Electric, the Industrial Products Division of Dana Corp.
PTDA's 1999 convention will be held Oct. 13-16 in Toronto.
