NWSA holds annual meeting

An excellent education program combined with networking opportunities drew a strong attendance at this year's National Welding Supply Assn. meeting, held in October at the San Diego Marriott. A convention highlight was the keynote speaker -- former Tennessee governor and presidential candidate Lamar Alexander.

Delegates attended educational seminars covering topics such as tax laws, succession planning and electronic commerce. Additionally, there was the always-popular contact booth program.

Other key events included the appointment of the association's new president, Fred Fitch of Industrial Welding Supply. Fitch succeeds Chip Valenite of nexAir, LLC ...

l ISSA hires director of European services. The International Sanitary Supply Assn. recently hired Mark Armitage as its director of European services. For the past 20 years, Armitage has worked for the U.S. Embassy in The Hague, The Netherlands, for the department of commerce.

Working out of an Amsterdam office, Armitage's responsibilities will include expanding membership and improving ISSA services within Europe. He will also provide support to members worldwide on international trade into and out of Europe.

In other ISSA news, the group celebrated its 75th anniversary in October in Las Vegas. Education was a primary focus of the convention, which offered members more than 30 seminars addressing current manufacturing and distribution issues.

In addition to the more than 750 exhibitors, the trade show floor featured technology and resource centers as well as a commemorative "ISSA Museum." Key-note speakers included Gen. Colin Powell, who spoke about "The Management of Crisis and Change" and Dr. Robert J. Kriegel, author of "If It Ain't Broke... BREAK IT." Next year will bring the first-ever, all-industry exhibition with the ISSA/INTERCLEAN USA convention, October 12-15, 1999, at McCormick Place North in Chicago ...
