EASA focuses on excellence

Orlando, Fla.--Members of the Electrical Apparatus Service Assn. held their annual convention June 28-July 1 at Marriott's Orlando World Center, where the theme was "Managing for Excellence."Some 4,100 members, spouses and their families attended. This year's floor show attracted a larger number of walk-ins than ever, representing end users from power plants to industries such as phosphate and mining companies, said Mike Stewart, chairman of the convention advisory committee. Stewart, president of Stewart's Electric Motor Works in Orlando, says the show increasingly provides value for vendors meeting informally with distributors.
In a keynote address, management consultant Robert Weiler said excellence begins with senior executives, who must define, start and teach it throughout the organization. "You must be the key driver of excellence in your organization. If you don't own it, it won't happen," said Weiler, of Brimstone Consulting Group in Camden, Maine.
Weiler stressed that embarking on excellence is never an accident and true leadership comes from finding time to plan.
General sessions and industry breakouts covered topics such as: "Your Guide to Marketing Success," "Best Practices for the Repair of Electric Motors," "The Cause and Analysis of Bearing and Shaft Failures," and other issues like estate planning.
