STAFDA's Halvorsento retire in 1999
By Staff -- Industrial Distribution, 9/1/1998
Elm Grove, Wis.-Morrie Halvorsen, executive director of the Specialty Tools & Fasteners Distributors Assn., plans to retire at the end of 1999. STAFDA officials made the announcement in July, although Halvorsen reportedly made his plans known to STAFDA officers during the group's annual convention last year in New Orleans.Earlier this year, a transition committee charged with finding a replacement for Halvorsen unanimously voted to promote member services director Georgia Foley to assistant executive director, effective July 1. Foley, Halvorsen's daughter, has worked for the association since 1994. The committee will evaluate Foley's performance next summer to determine if she should succeed her father.
Before joining the association, Halvorsen was vice president of marketing for Milwaukee Electric Tool and ITT Phillips Drill. In 1977 he became executive director of STAFDA, which then consisted of 18 distributors. Halvorsen was hired to build membership, involve manufacturers, and develop a range of member programs and benefits.
STAFDA has since grown to 2,430 member companies. In the association's 21-year history, it has never raised its annual $350 dues nor charged members an assessment, say STAFDA officials.
Foley spent seven years with the Exhibit Designers & Producers Assn. before joining STAFDA as member services director. Her duties at STAFDA include handling teleconference programs, coordinating and attending regional meetings, working with consultants, helping to plan the annual convention, managing STAFDA's lending library, and taking most incoming calls. She has also run two "Excellence in Management Schools" for the association.
