U.S. electronics sales up 10 percent

Arlington, va.--U.S. factory sales of electronics equipment, components and related products totaled nearly $119 billion for the first quarter of 1998, representing a 10.6 percent increase over last year's figures for the same period, according to the Electronic Industries Alliance."These first-quarter results are higher than our original forecasts indicating a continuation of the double-digit growth we have been experiencing over the past few years," EIA president Peter F. McCloskey said in a press release.
A breakdown of sales by product sector shows that:
* Electronic component sales rose six percent to $37.5 billion
* Consumer electronics saw an increase of almost four percent to $2.5 billion
* The telecommunications sector continues to increase with $16.2 billion, up nearly 17 percent
* Defense communications rose 11.4 percent to $7.76 billion
* The computers and peripherals sector, with the highest percentage growth, hit $24.9 billion, up 18.1 percent over the 1997 first-quarter figure
* Electromedical equipment saw a nine-percent rise to $2.9 billion.
