Milestones to mark ASMMA/I.D.A. Spring Meeting

By Staff -- Industrial Distribution, 5/1/1998

Orlando, Fla.--Members of the American Supply and Machinery Manufacturer's Assn. and the Industrial Distribution Assn. will mark two anniversaries when they meet in Florida next month for their annual Spring Convention. The meeting, to be held June 6-8 at the Marriott World Center in Orlando, will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Manufacturer's Conference Booth Program, as well as the 10th Anniversary of I.D.A.

In addition to the two anniversaries, the meeting will be marked by a host of educational sessions and a general session featuring former British Prime Minister John Major. ASMMA and I.D.A. officials expect some 3,000 attendees at the convention, which is appropriately themed, "Strength in Unity." I.D.A. officials say they look forward to another successful and not-to-be-missed event.

"This is truly an exciting time for our industry and it's an exciting time to be in the business," says incoming I.D.A. president Sam Mitchell of Blackstone in Memphis, Tenn, which was recently acquired by the Industrial Distribution Group. "I can't fathom anyone not being at the Spring Convention."

The Manufacturer's Conference Booth Program has long been the cornerstone of the convention. Manufacturer members will set up booths at the Orange County Convention Center, allowing distributors the chance to network with old as well as new and potential suppliers. For the third year, the program will also include the Construction Products Showcase, a special segment aimed at companies looking to expand into the construction market.

I.D.A. will celebrate its 10th Anniversary at the Annual Breakfast Meeting on Sunday, June 7. The association was formed in 1988 by combining the former National and Southern Industrial Distributors Assn.'s and the Central States Industrial Distributors Assn. NIDA, SIDA, and ASMMA met that year in Orlando for what was known as the "Triple Convention."

Other program highlights include a technology showcase and a manufacturers' representatives forum. In addition, scheduled speakers include well-known industry consultants Bill McCleave, Jim Pancero, Frank Lynn, and Reed Stith.

The 1998 Spring Convention also marks the first annual ID Charity Golf Outing, sponsored by Industrial Distribution magazine. Proceeds from the event, to be held Friday, June 5, will go the Boys' and Girls' Club of Central Florida. The Young Executives Forum, a wing of ASMMA and I.D.A., will sponsor its own golf event on Tuesday, June 9, with proceeds going to the Young Executives Scholarship Foundation.
