Electronics sales top $460 billion

Arlington, Va.--Last year turned out to be another record-breaking, double-digit growth period for the U.S. electronics industry. Factory sales of electronics equipment, components and related products totaled just over $460 billion in 1997, an 11 percent increase over 1996 figures, according to the Electronics Industries Assn.EIA president Peter F. McCloskey is optimistic for 1998, as well.
"[Nineteen ninety-eight], despite turbulence in the Asian markets, appears to be poised for yet another great year of growth for our industry,'' he says.
EIA based its report on information provided by the U.S. Department of Commerce. According to those figures, the telecommunications industry saw the highest sales increase over 1996 -- from $57.1 billion to $64.9 billion, marking a 14 percent rise. The sale of electronic components also rose significantly -- 13 percent -- from $131.6 billion in 1996 to $147.6 billion last year. Electromedical equipment and industrial control electronics saw the lowest increases, rising seven percent each.
