Leading the commodity management charge

By John R Johnson -- Industrial Distribution, 4/1/1998

Clay Greiffendorf's responsibilities don't stop at managing the Saginaw, Mich. branch or with his own sales quotas. He's also leading the pitch to make Industrial Belting & Supply a tier one commodity management provider for power transmission and material handling products for three General Motors plants in Michigan -- two in Saginaw, and one in Bay City.

GM began the process by reviewing 15 distributors and has reduced the field to three finalists. The automaker hopes to make its decision by the end of May.

"They are definitely in the final ring," says Joe Tomasek, storekeeper at GM's Powertrain, Saginaw Metal Castings Operation. "They are one of three finalists to quote on this thing, and they have a good chance of getting it. They are doing commodity management work already. If they don't get the whole package, they'll be in the picture somehow because of their conveyor belting. We want them, but we have to buck up against the other two plants, too."

Ron Yob, president of Industrial Belting & Supply, says his firm is involved in several commodity management deals, but this is the first one Greiffendorf has brought to the table. However, Greiffendorf's innovation doesn't surprise him.

"Clay is always looking for new things that are cutting edge and his response to our customer needs in commodity management is something he sought out," says Yob. "He went after the customer hoping they would listen, and they have. Clay went out and found this and brought it to us."
