A Critical View

Modern gets high grades for creating an attractive Web site that effectively uses color and graphics to showcase the company, its history, personnel and products. The company also deserves credit for avoiding the temptation to use "frames" that have become so popular on Web sites but which are often confusing and difficult to navigate. By the same token, "hotlinks" to other pages are kept to a reasonable number and are legitimate connections to pages on the site, not just an excuse to practice mouse clicking. Another nice touch is an on-line credit application. On the other hand, there are several aspects of the site that could stand added attention. For one thing, the black type in the six company logos that are displayed in color on every page are relatively difficult to read when viewed on the relatively diminutive screens of most laptop computers. The problem disappears, however, when a monitor of 14-inches or larger is used.
Another troubling detail is the fact that various pages indicate that "You can always call us directly at one of the locations listed in the 'Locations' section." Unfortunately, the "Locations" section inexplicably does not provide any phone numbers or even addresses for each location. Only the city is indicated. To find telephone numbers for Modern's branches you must click on the "Contact Sales" link for each company.
Of course, as with any Web site, Modern's site is constantly being
improved and undoubtedly these minor details will be addressed in the near future.
