Combining innovation and tradition for success
By Staff -- Industrial Distribution, 2/1/1998
J.H. Bennett's commodity management program has been so successful with the automotive companies, commodity group manager Dave Gawthrop is working to extend that service to other customers. With 11 successful contracts under its belt, J.H. Bennett has much to show other potential CM customers. And expanding the program to those customers will help J.H. Bennett attain its goal of having commodity management represent 50 percent of company revenues. While commodity management (which began in 1994) will be an ever-expanding part of the business, executive vice president Ray Blashill says the company is not abandoning its traditional way of going to market. Future plans include expanding that traditional business, as well as growing geographically through start-up and acquisition. Last year, the Michigan-based company added a branch in Indiana, boosting the number of locations to four: Novi and Grand Rapids, Mich.; Cleveland, Ohio; and now Indianapolis.
Continuing to grow the company will require the employee dedication J.H. Bennett has become accustomed to. Blashill and Gawthrop are confident that dedication will continue, pointing out that as an ESOP firm, everyone shares in the company's success or failure.
"Fortunately for the last three years" says Blashill, "there's been more success than failure.''
