Hydraulic Institute offers new guidelines
By Staff -- Industrial Distribution, 1/1/1998
The Hydraulic Institute recently published three new standards and a professional guide for fluid power distributors.A 12-page guide to energy-efficient pumps and pumping systems was released in October. Derived form the joint HI/U.S. Department of Energy video-based education program, the guide provides energy-saving case studies and seven ways to save energy through changes in system design and application.
In most cases, the changes can produce energy savings up to 20 percent, according to HI. The video education program was developed to continue education for engineers, designers, manufacturers, consultants and executives throughout the industry and to help meet the DOE Motor Challenge of saving five billion kilowatt-hours of electricity by 2000.
To further educate and assist users and specifiers of pumps and related equipment, HI has also introduced three new standards for centrifugal pumps. The standards address horizontal baseplated design, allowable operating region, and polymer materials.
The standards contain new information and were established with input from both pump users and manufacturers, in accordance with American National Standard Institute guidelines. As part of an agreement between HI and EUROPUMP (the European equivalent of the Hydraulic Institute), EUROPUMP members also reviewed the standards.
