Body belt restrictions take effect

By Staff -- Industrial Distribution, 1/1/1998

Washington, D.C.--As of Jan. 1, body belts are no longer acceptable as part of a personal fall arrest system for construction workers, according to the Occupation Safety and Health Administration. OSHA issued a reminder of the new regulation in November. Also effective Jan. 1 was the provision that locking snap hooks must be used in personal fall arrest systems. Both requirements are part of the final rule on safety standards for fall protection in the construction industry that was issued on August 9, 1994. Implementation of the prohibition against body belts and non-locking snap hooks was delayed to reduce the economic impact on employers.
