Web used mostly for name recognition
By Staff -- Industrial Distribution, 1/1/1998
New York, N.Y.-- Nearly two-thirds of all mid-sized manufacturing companies will have commercial World Wide Web sites by the year's end, a survey of 510 firms reports. Most of the industrial companies surveyed say they primarily use Web sites for marketing and advertising, while only 18 percent look to sell products via the Internet. Almost a third say they created sites to remain competitive, according to the survey by Grant Thornton LLP, an accounting and management consulting firm.
Forty-four percent of American manufacturers with annual sales between $10 to $500 million reported having Web sites, and another 21 percent plan to. The survey also found that nearly three-quarters of the firms say they would benefit from "extranets,'' private Web sites that link companies and their suppliers to relay production changes, process orders and other time-sensitive information.
